| Minutes for 7th Java Sims meeting |
Venue: AJC
Date: 22 Feb 2013
Time: 1500 – 1700
1. MOE ExcelFest 2013
1.1 Booth Layout
• Fascia board will include the names of all schools, with each name separated by a hyphen.
ie: River Valley High School – Yishun JC – Anderson JC – Innova JC – Serangoon JC – MOEHQ-ETD
• Each booth will be given 1 table, 2 chairs, 3 power points and 3 spotlight. There is a need to rent:
✔ 2 tables for STP and demo set respectively
✔ 1 chair
✔ 2 spotlights (a total of 5 spotlights is needed for the 5 wall posters, no spotlight for poster on stand)
Information on and cost of rental on F5 and F6. Submit the 2 forms by 8 March 2013. Late submission will result in a 30% late charge.
• At each point in time, there will be around 3-4 people at the booth.
• The location of the booth will be informed by MOE.
1.2 Poster issues
• Poster size is 519x845.
• Every poster must have a title at the top, ie: Open Source Physics @ school name
ie:

1.2 Poster issues
• Poster size is 519x845.
• Every poster must have a title at the top, ie: Open Source Physics @ school name
ie:
- Open Source Physics @ River Valley High School
- Open Source Physics @ Yishun JC
- Open Source Physics @ Anderson JC
- Open Source Physics @ Innova JC
- Open Source Physics @ Serangoon JC
- Open Source Physics @ MOEHQ-ETD
• Each poster should have 3 columns of text, accompanied by a subtitle. Each column of text should be at most 150 words. For the poster to be reader-friendly, it is recommended that the number of words for each column be kept around 100 words and that the text be in point form. However, if necessary, complete sentences should be given to ensure the points are self-explanatory.
• The font size is standardized across all posters. However, is the word is too little, the designer may increase the font size a little. There is no need to balance out the number of words for each column of text.
• Each column of text should also be accompanied by at least 1 photo. Do not give too many photos as it may lose the focus of the poster. It is recommended that the photo matches the text in each column. If there is no matching photo for text, the photo can be replaced by a bubble (with subtitle of the text in it).
• Layout is only necessary if there is more than 1 photo for a column of text. The purpose of the layout is to show which photos go with which text. If there is only 1 photo for each column of text, no layout needs to be submitted.
• The photos and text for the posters should be emailed individually by each school to Brian (dongseok.song@sg.pico.com) by Thursday, 28 February 2013. Note that the file should be small (ie smaller than 20MB).
A. ETD
✔ 1 photo for each column of text, hence no layout need to be submitted.
✔ Horizontal layout

B. AJC
✔ Did 2 projects but the 3 photos submitted match the first project more.
✔ Hence, the tentative layout will be only 2 columns, each of which for one project, accompanied by 3 photos. (Layout to be confirmed by Jamie)
✔ Vertical layout following the template.
C. RVHS
✔ Did 3 projects, hence there will be 1 column for each project, accompanied by 1 photo each
✔ A QR code will be included. The position of the code will be decided by the designers.
✔ Vertical layout
D. IJC
✔ Did 2 projects, but in the 3 photos submitted, 2 are geared towards Ripple Tank project and only 1 is suited for the Collision Cart project. There is no photo for 'Challenge'.
✔ Hence the suggested layout will be:
➢ 1 photo on student using the simulation for 'Challenge'
➢ 1 snapshot of Ripple Tank simulation for 'Approach and Solution'
➢ 1 photo for Collision Cart
✔ Increase the number of words for 'Challenge'
✔ Horizontal layout
E. YJC (absent for this meeting with apologies)
✔ The final layout will be only 3 photos for 3 columns (omit the last photo because it is too small)
✔ Horizontal layout
F. SRJC (absent for this meeting with apologies)
✔ Recommended layout is horizontal.
1.3 Interactive Activity
• A real physical set (ie: Falling magnet) will be set up at the booth to engage the viewers.
• The apparatus (including a portable data logger) for the demo will be provided by AJC.
• The viewers will be invited to play with both the demo set and the simulation. This will enable them to make comparisons between the two and thus see the advantages (eg: greater control) of using the simulations in teaching or learning Physics as opposed to physical experiments. This will in turn emphasize the use of Java simulations to complement real equipments in Physics education.
2. Visit by Prof. Hwang
• Ticket for Prof Hwang had already been book.
• Ai Phing to check if the hotel has airport transfer. Alternatively, we can arrange transport service with the airport.
• The workshop by Prof Hwang will be conducted on 22 March 2013. The medium for publicity includes the NIE network and email notifications by team members to Physics teachers.
2.5. Some new design model and worksheets available on dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zwqt3vec6l864em/KMOSi2x6AT
