Burning Ship Fractal JavaScript Simulation Applet HTML5

The Burning Ship fractal is actually a slight modification to the Mandelbrot Set (It's the last one, I promise! For now, that is...) by taking the absolute value of both the real and imaginary parts of the complex number z before squaring it in each iteration.

Thus, the equation is as follows:


Now, while this may seem like a small change to the equation, the change to the fractal itself is anything but.

Zooming in on the bottom left corner of the fractal reveals yet another burning ship, this time looking slightly different.

Isn't this beautiful? It almost looks man-made!

It's fascinating how such small changes to a simple equation can create such large changes in the shape of a fractal. From the standard Mandelbrot Set to the Burning Ship, fractal geometry is indeed a branch of mathematics worth looking into, if not just for the simple beauty of it all.
