Letter no. 15 to national representatives of GIREP
October 1st , 2020
Dear representative of GIREP
It has been a while since I contacted you with Newsletter 14. Many things happened, and this newsletter will update you about GIREP as organisation and its activities.
Earlier this year, a new board was elected, you can find the members in the GIREP Newsletter 63, edited by Eilish McLoughlin, our new secretary. Earlier on, Dagmara Sokolowska also published Newsletter 62 and Newsletter 61.
Our new and extended board decided to give priority to a new website, which will be put in place very soon. Claudio Fazio is the responsible for this achievement.
In June we had an online GIREP General Assembly, which was new, but successful. Details in the latest newsletter.
We are also going through a renewal of our statutes, already voted by the general assembly, which implies a few changes, for example, we no longer will use the word committee, but board instead. Also, our communication needs to comply with new official Belgian legislation.
The Covid-19 pandemic forced us to postpone the Hanoi conference from 2020 to 2021, almost exactly one year later. Another measure we needed to take was to change the format of the Malta Seminar of November. I quote a message from Eilish here (can be copied):
GIREP 2020 Webinar:
The International Research Group on Physics Teaching - GIREP [Groupe International de Recherche sur l'Enseignement de la Physique] together with the University of Malta, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Science invite your participation in an online webinar with the focus 'Physics Teacher Education - What matters?' This first international GIREP webinar will be held over three days between Monday 16th and Wednesday 18th November 2020 between 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm (Central European Time).
The format of the webinar will be the following: keynote presentation in plenary followed by short oral presentations and discussions. Contributions will focus on the Webinar topics and discussions will be organised in six Working Groups (WG):
[i] ICT and Multimedia in Teacher Education [Initial and Further PD]
[ii] Experiments and lab work in teacher education,
[iii] Quantum Mechanics in Teaching and Learning physics,
[iv] Formal, non-formal and informal aspects of physics education at primary level
[v] Strategies for pre-service physics teacher education at all levels
[vi] In-service teacher professional learning strategies
We believe that this webinar will be of interest to you and your colleagues involved in physics teaching and learning and/or Physics teacher education. This event will provide a unique opportunity for communities of physics educators from different countries to meet and share their experiences in Physics Teacher Education.
You are invited to participate in the GIREP Webinar 2020 by either
[i] by attending the webinar sessions or
[ii] by submitting an abstract for an oral presentation in the webinar. Information about the webinar can be found in the website https://www.um.edu.mt/events/girep
Below please find some important Webinar dates:
Registration for Webinar 2020 opens: 01 June 2020
Abstract Submission Deadline: extended until 10 October 2020
Notification of Acceptance: extended until 31 October 2020
Registration Deadline and Fee: 05 November 2020 (12:00 CET)
I want to stress is that the fee is very low, and for teachers completely free. This implies that teachers from all over the world can attend, a unique opportunity to meet! Please send this message (also) to your physics teacher communities. The deadlines are set rather close to the start of the Webinar, so there is still time to spread this good news.
This brings me to GIREP membership. In recent years we have made membership very attractive: as a GIREP member you have exclusive access to the digital proceedings of the past GIREP conferences. In addition you can get a reduced registration fee for GIREP conferences and for conferences of our partner organisations (see GIREP Newsletter 54). Starting from 2018, GIREP members get also free-access codes to GIREP books published by Springer.(see Newsletter 63, p. 14 for an overview).
Sponsored membership for country representatives is possible by sending a mail with short motivation to pontonvzw@telenet.be .
Dear representative, thank you very much for your engagement in spreading this newsletter to the physics (education) community of your country. Hopefully we meet soon, be it online.
Due to GDPR regulations this letter is send to less people than before. Should you know colleagues from countries without GIREP representative, please let me know. Thank you!
Wim Peeters
Vice-president of GIREP.
