Science Unit Sustainability Team Self Notes

What do you know about sustainability? Are there any particular areas within sustainability that interests you most?

Sustainability is a broad and multifaceted concept that encompasses various aspects of human life and the environment. It revolves around the idea of meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability seeks to strike a balance between economic, social, and environmental considerations to create a more harmonious and enduring world.

There are several key areas within sustainability that are of significant interest:

1. Environmental Sustainability: This aspect focuses on minimizing the negative impacts of human activities on the environment. It involves practices such as reducing pollution, conserving natural resources, and addressing issues like climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss.

2. Social Sustainability: Social sustainability emphasizes the well-being of people and communities. It involves promoting social equity, inclusivity, and justice. Issues related to education, healthcare, access to clean water, and social cohesion fall under this category.

3. Economic Sustainability: Economic sustainability aims to ensure long-term economic prosperity without depleting resources or creating inequalities. It involves practices such as responsible consumption and production, fair trade, and ethical business practices.

4. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The United Nations has outlined 17 Sustainable Development Goals, covering various aspects of sustainability, including poverty reduction, gender equality, clean energy, and responsible consumption. These goals provide a global framework for addressing sustainability challenges.

5. Sustainable Agriculture: This area focuses on agricultural practices that minimize environmental impact, promote biodiversity, and ensure food security for current and future generations. Organic farming, agroforestry, and sustainable fishing are examples of sustainable agriculture practices.

6. Green Energy and Renewable Resources: Transitioning to renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change.

7. Circular Economy: A circular economy aims to minimize waste and maximize the use of resources by designing products for longevity, reusing and recycling materials, and reducing overall resource consumption.

8. Sustainable Transportation: Developing eco-friendly transportation systems, including electric vehicles, public transit, and active transportation (walking and cycling), helps reduce emissions and congestion in urban areas.

9. Conservation and Biodiversity: Protecting natural habitats and preserving biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecological balance and the health of ecosystems.

Share a sustainable living practice you have adopted in your daily live.

Reusable shopping bags: Replace plastic grocery bags with reusable cloth or tote bags.

Stainless steel or glass water bottles: Avoid buying bottled water and carry your own refillable water bottle.

Cloth napkins: Use cloth napkins instead of disposable paper napkins.

Reusable food containers: Pack lunches and store leftovers in reusable containers rather than disposable plastic wrap or bags.

Stainless steel or bamboo utensils: Carry your own reusable utensils for meals on the go.

Metal or glass straws: Replace disposable plastic straws with reusable metal or glass straws.

Reducing single-use plastics helps reduce plastic pollution in the environment, conserves resources, and lowers the carbon footprint associated with plastic production and disposal. It's a small but impactful step toward a more sustainable lifestyle.

Share how you have taught sustainability to students.

**Lesson Title:** Introduction to Sustainability

**Grade Level:** Middle School

**Objective:**

- To introduce students to the concept of sustainability.

- To help students understand the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic.

**Materials:**

- Whiteboard and markers

- Multimedia presentation (e.g., slides or videos)

- Handouts with discussion questions

**Lesson Plan:**

1. **Engagement (15 minutes):** Begin the lesson by showing images or short videos depicting environmental issues like pollution, deforestation, or climate change. Ask students to share their observations and thoughts about these issues. Encourage them to think about how these problems might affect their lives and future generations.

2. **Introduction to Sustainability (10 minutes):** Define sustainability as the ability to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Explain that sustainability involves balancing three interconnected pillars: environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

3. **Three Pillars of Sustainability (15 minutes):** Break down the three pillars of sustainability:

   - **Environmental Sustainability:** Discuss concepts like conservation, reducing waste, renewable energy, and biodiversity. Use examples and visuals to illustrate these concepts.

   - **Social Sustainability:** Talk about the importance of social equity, inclusivity, and community well-being. Mention topics like access to education, healthcare, and clean water.

   - **Economic Sustainability:** Explain how responsible consumption, fair trade, and ethical business practices contribute to long-term economic prosperity.

4. **Discussion (15 minutes):** Distribute handouts with discussion questions related to sustainability. Encourage students to work in pairs or small groups to answer these questions and share their thoughts with the class. Sample questions might include:

   - How can reducing single-use plastics contribute to environmental sustainability?

   - Why is it important for everyone to have access to clean water and education for social sustainability?

   - What are some examples of businesses that prioritize economic sustainability? How do they do it?

5. **Group Activity (20 minutes):** Divide the class into groups and assign each group one of the three pillars of sustainability. Ask them to brainstorm practical actions or initiatives that can promote sustainability within their assigned pillar. Each group should present their ideas to the class.

6. **Conclusion (5 minutes):** Summarize the key points of the lesson and emphasize the importance of individual and collective actions in promoting sustainability. Encourage students to think about how they can incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives.

7. **Homework (optional):** Assign homework that challenges students to research and report on a sustainability-related topic of their choice. This can encourage independent learning and critical thinking.

This lesson plan provides a structured approach to introducing sustainability concepts to students and engaging them in discussions and activities to deepen their understanding of the topic.

Singapore's Green Plan and Eco Stewardship Programme,

1. **Singapore Green Plan**:

The Singapore Green Plan is a comprehensive and long-term sustainability roadmap that the Singaporean government introduced to address various environmental challenges and promote sustainability across different sectors. The plan was launched in February 2021 and covers five key pillars:

   a. **City in Nature**: This pillar focuses on enhancing green spaces, biodiversity, and improving the overall quality of the environment in Singapore. Initiatives include increasing greenery, expanding park networks, and promoting biodiversity.

   b. **Sustainable Living**: This pillar aims to encourage sustainable lifestyle choices among residents. It includes efforts to reduce waste, increase energy efficiency, and promote eco-friendly transportation.

   c. **Energy Reset**: This pillar focuses on Singapore's energy transition, with goals to increase the adoption of renewable energy sources and improve energy efficiency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

   d. **Sustainable Industries**: Singapore aims to transform its industries by encouraging sustainable practices and innovation. This includes fostering green technology and supporting sustainable production processes.

   e. **Resilient Future**: This pillar addresses climate change adaptation and resilience. Singapore aims to enhance its infrastructure and develop strategies to deal with the impacts of climate change.

2. **Eco Stewardship Programme**:

The Eco Stewardship Programme is a community-based initiative in Singapore that encourages individuals and organizations to take an active role in environmental conservation and stewardship. This program promotes eco-friendly practices and environmental education, engaging communities in efforts to protect and preserve Singapore's natural heritage.

Key elements of the Eco Stewardship Programme include:

   - Organizing and participating in community clean-up events.

   - Promoting the responsible use of natural resources.

   - Educating residents about biodiversity and the importance of protecting local ecosystems.

   - Supporting the restoration of natural habitats and green spaces.

   - Encouraging sustainable gardening and landscaping practices.

These initiatives are part of Singapore's broader efforts to address environmental and sustainability challenges while engaging the community in a shared responsibility for environmental conservation.
