 Designing interactive digital textbooks involves careful consideration of various principles to ensure they are engaging, effective, and user-friendly. Here are five design principles commonly applied to interactive digital textbooks:

1. **Visual Hierarchy and Organization:** Clear visual hierarchy and organization are essential for guiding users through the content of the digital textbook. Designers should use visual cues such as headings, subheadings, colors, and typography to prioritize information, create structure, and help users navigate the textbook effectively. Consistent and intuitive navigation pathways should be established to facilitate easy access to different sections and chapters

2. **Interactivity:** Interactivity is a fundamental aspect of digital textbooks. Designers should incorporate interactive elements such as quizzes, exercises, simulations, and multimedia content to encourage active engagement and participation from users. Interactive features should be intuitive, engaging, and aligned with the learning objectives of the textbook.

By adhering to these design principles, designers can create interactive digital textbooks that are engaging, accessible, and effective tools for facilitating learning and knowledge acquisition.

IDTs play a similar role to print textbooks. They contain authoritative subject matter content, but are more dynamic than print. ​

IDTs are NOT digitized textbooks (digitized versions of current print textbooks without digital media enhancements). ​

  1. Strong organising schema that reflects the scope and sequence of subject syllabus content;​
  2. Rich media objects that better engages learners & caters to different learning needs;​
  3. Teacher customisation of specific topics/lessons to match student profiles; ​
  4. Student agency to be self-directed through learning progression pathways and automated learning feedback; ​
  5. Data-driven decision making through the provision of critical learning data to teachers and students.​
