The Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS) has introduced features to enhance the accessibility and interactivity of multimedia content through video and audio transcription.

For Teachers:

  • Generating and Editing Transcripts: Teachers can generate transcripts for their uploaded video or audio files directly within SLS. Once generated, these transcripts can be edited to ensure accuracy and relevance. This functionality extends to media that has been split into sections, allowing for transcripts to be created and modified for each segment.
  • Inserting Transcripts: To enhance the learning experience, teachers can insert transcripts into their modules. This provides students with textual representations of the audio or video content, aiding in comprehension and review. https://www.learning.moe.edu.sg/teacher-user-guide/author/insert-transcript-for-video-audio/

For Students:

  • Viewing Transcripts and Annotations: When transcripts are enabled by teachers, students can view them alongside the corresponding media. Additionally, students have the capability to add notes at specific timestamps, creating annotations that are linked to particular moments in the audio or video. These annotations are accessible in the transcript and can be managed through the annotation drawer, enhancing engagement and understanding. learning.moe.edu.sg/student-user-guide/self-study/add-notes-to-audio-or-video

These transcription features in SLS are designed to support diverse learning needs, promote active engagement with multimedia resources, and facilitate a more inclusive educational environment.

Condition:

In the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS), the ability to generate and edit transcripts for video or audio files is primarily granted to the module owner—the teacher who uploaded the media content. This functionality is designed to enhance accessibility and support diverse learning needs.

Key Points:

  • Module Owner Responsibilities:

    • Generating Transcripts: After uploading a video or audio file, the module owner can generate a transcript directly within SLS.
    • Editing Transcripts: Post-generation, the owner has the capability to edit the transcript to ensure accuracy and relevance.
    • Enabling Student Access: The owner can choose to display the transcript and captions to students by adjusting the media object's settings.
  • Collaborative Editing:

    • While SLS allows module owners to share their modules with colleagues, the ability to generate and edit transcripts remains with the original uploader. Collaborators can view and utilize the media content but do not have permissions to modify transcripts.
  • Limitations:

    • MOE Library Content: Transcription features are not available for videos or audios sourced from the MOE Library due to intellectual property restrictions.

For a comprehensive understanding of managing media objects and utilizing transcription features in SLS, module owners are encouraged to consult the official SLS Teacher User Guide.

By effectively leveraging these tools, educators can enhance the learning experience, ensuring content is accessible and engaging for all students.
