SLS Data Assistant and Feedback Availability
Why “Add Feedback” may be disabled, and when it becomes grey out and gives the appearance of availability
Overview
Teachers may notice that the “Add Feedback” option in Data Assistant / Generated Analysis is sometimes greyed out and cannot be clicked.
This may happen even when:
-
students have already interacted with SALiS, or

-
the teacher expects to comment on a grouped set of similar responses.
This is not necessarily an error. It depends on the state of the discussion/chat.
What is happening
In the Data Assistant / Generated Analysis view, SLS analyses student responses and groups them by common themes or patterns.
For example, it may group students who:
- did not answer the discussion topic fully,
- gave very brief responses,
- had language difficulties, or
- shared similar ideas.
Teachers may expect to use this grouping to give feedback directly to those students. This is indeed possible, but only when the discussion/chat has been closed by the teacher.
Correct explanation
Before the discussion/chat is closed
While the discussion or SALiS chat is still open:
- students may still continue interacting,
- responses may still change,
- the system keeps the feedback option disabled.
So in this stage:
- “Add Feedback” may appear greyed out
- teachers cannot yet provide feedback from Data Assistant
After the discussion/chat is closed
Once the teacher closes the discussion/chat:
- student interaction is considered complete,
- the responses are treated as final for that activity state,
- “Add Feedback” becomes available in Data Assistant.
So at this stage:
- teachers can use the grouped analysis,
- identify students with similar response patterns,
-
and provide feedback from within Data Assistant.
Key point for teachers
The issue is not simply whether students have used up all their SALiS interactions.
A more important condition is:
Has the teacher closed the discussion/chat?
If the chat is still open, feedback may remain disabled.
If the chat is closed, feedback can be enabled in Data Assistant.
Practical guidance
If “Add Feedback” is disabled:
Check whether the discussion/chat is still open.
If you want to give feedback through Data Assistant:
- Ensure students have completed their intended interaction
- Close the discussion/chat
- Return to Generated Analysis
- Open the menu for the relevant grouped theme
- Click Add Feedback
Suggested wording for documentation
Short version
Teachers can provide feedback from Data Assistant only after the discussion or SALiS chat has been closed. If the discussion/chat is still open, the “Add Feedback” option may remain disabled.
Longer version
In Data Assistant, student responses are grouped by common themes to help teachers review patterns across the class. While the discussion or SALiS chat is still open, the “Add Feedback” option may be disabled because student interaction is still ongoing. After the teacher closes the discussion/chat, the grouped responses become available for teacher feedback, and the “Add Feedback” option can be used from within Data Assistant.

(A2,2) Analyse Students’ Responses with Data Assistant
Analyse Students’ Responses using Data Assistant
Data Assistant (DAT) is an AI-powered tool that analyses qualitative data from student responses. It identifies and summarises major themes from discussions, highlights common misconceptions from students’ responses, and much more. This provides you with quick insights into students’ responses and allows for more timely interventions.
Important: As Data Assistant uses generative AI, its response is probabilistic in nature. Thus, it may be inaccurate at times. It is crucial that teachers carefully review the analysis provided and validate its accuracy before making any interventions based on it.
Where Can You Use Data Assistant?
You can access DAT in the following areas:
Free-Response Questions
Discussion Boards/Forums
Interactive Thinking Tools (ITT)
Quizzes (New!)
Using Data Assistant to Analyse Free-Response Questions, Discussions & ITT
Select from your existing resources an activity containing a Free-Response Question, Discussion Board/Forum, or Interactive Thinking Tool.
Scroll to the bottom of the Question, click View All Responses.

Click the Data Assistant icon.

Select a pre-populated recipe or create your own by typing instructions for Data Assistant in the space provided. A recipe is a short set of instructions that guides Data Assistant in analysing qualitative data.

Click Generate. Data Assistant will provide an overall analysis and group responses and students into common themes.

Data Assistant can work on questions marked by Short Answer Feedback Assistant to identify common errors and the students who made these errors.
You can choose to save the generated analysis for future reference by clicking on the ‘Save analysis’ button. Please note that saving analyses is only for Discussion and aggregated Free-Response Questions.

You can also click on the Overflow (3-dot icon) to access various follow up actions.
Clicking Add Feedback allows you to give feedback to groups of students that fall under the same theme.

You can click on View Students to see the names of students within a particular theme. Note:

When Learning Assistant (SALiS) is enabled in a Discussion or Live Chat, the “Add Feedback” option in Data Assistant may be disabled while the discussion/chat is still active.Teachers will be able to provide feedback via Data Assistant only after the discussion or Learning Assistant interaction has been closed.

This ensures that students complete their interaction cycle with SALiS before teacher feedback is provided.

The feedback will be prepopulated with the analysis from Data Assistant. Click Send to share your comments with grouped students. You may also edit the feedback before sending them to students. You can notify students of the comment added by checking the Notify student(s) checkbox.
Click Filter Students to view all responses of any grouped students.
For Discussion Board/Forum: Click Add Keyword Tags to label posts with relevant tags for easier categorisation.
For Interactive Thinking Tool (ITT): Click Bookmark Responses to bookmark specific student responses for later reference.
