Synopsis
Course ContentIn this workshop, participants will be introduced to the modelling cycle that promotes an integrated understanding of the modelling process and developing the necessary skills for teachers to implement the method. Participants will be provided with the workshop materials, reading list etc. The physical materials and experiments are simple to set up and should be readily available in standard laboratory.
Participants will be led through a series of light experiments such as pinhole camera, single plane mirror and multiple mirrors reflection, to gather data and make sense of them through discussion, probing and whiteboarding that are unique in Modeling Instruction to improve the quality of discourse and formulate the ray (particle) model of light. Using the model created participants will then apply it to a novel situation to deepen their understanding.
Participants will also be introduced to other models of light such as the wave-model and particle-wave model necessary to explain phenomenon that cannot be adequately explained using the ray model of light.
At the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to develop, implement and share how they apply the modelling instruction in their own classroom context.
